Trends in DevOps and IT To Watch

DevOps Trends cloud computing

The world of information technology is constantly evolving. Likewise new strategies and tools emerge every year. That’s especially true in DevOps. This term encompasses philosophies, practices, and tools that help systems become more efficient and effective. As a result such developments become trends as more organizations incorporate them as standard practice.

It’s an area of interest for professionals who are considering a Master of Science in Applied Information Technology. Here are some of the trends that have emerged and will continue to evolve over the coming year.

Defining DevOps

The term originates from the words development and operations. However, there is still considerable debate over the exact definition. Most now agree that to be successful in DevOps, it requires combining some foundational elements. Nicole Forsgren, CEO of DevOps Research and Assessment, told Tech Beacon that people should use the acronym CALMS to remember the main components of DevOps: culture, automation, lean, measurement and sharing.

DevOps in Action

In a report about the tech industry and its use of the cloud and DevOps, management company RightScale found that while the number of enterprises using DevOps had increased to 84% of those surveyed, only 30% had put it into action. As with other areas of technology such as data analysis, the difference between the use of the technology and putting it into action to solve organizational challenges remains wide.

Worldwide Use

The site Statista reported that in 2018, about 17% of all development professionals around the globe said their company had fully embraced DevOps, up from 10% in 2017. In contrast, 3% said they had never heard of it. The largest percentage (22%) said that their company has “just undertaken the DevOps journey.”

More Use of Automation

One of the tools that comes out of DevOps is automating more routine tasks. The goal in many areas is “zero touch” automation. This means that human beings don’t have to get involved once software is programmed and machine learning takes over. That’s why “automation” is part of CALMS.

Site Reliability Engineers

These engineers are expected to grow in number as this relatively new job expands into more organizations. They focus primarily on better architecture of sites, as well as faster applications that provide users with the services they need in the best way possible. Hence, they will continue to evolve their software development skills to work better in collaboration with software developers.

Serverless Computing

Server-less computing is perhaps the biggest trend emerging from DevOps. Server-less computing allows sites to contract with cloud services to act as the server. There is no prepaid charge, businesses are charged based only on the resources they use. For developers it’s also a great advantage – users can write and use code without having to worry about the underlying infrastructure of the site.

These are some of the evolving trends in DevOps – or the continuation and more widespread acceptance of trends that have been developing in the past few years. For those earning a master’s degree in applied IT, it’s a key part of the job to keep track of these trends and stay on top of the latest developments.
