It’s well-known that information technology is one of the fastest growing career fields in the country. But what is the projected growth for IT professionals?

The federal government projects 13% growth in all IT-related fields by 2026, adding more than half a million IT professionals to the workforce. However, a recent study by Harvey Nash/KPMG found that 65% of tech leaders said there is a shortage of talented tech workers – the highest level since 2008.

Rising demand and low supply means that those who commit to earning a Master of Science in Applied IT are prepared to take on some of the best jobs in IT, including leadership positions.

What industries are hiring tech workers? There are jobs available in almost every sector of the economy. The following six rank among the hottest right now for IT professionals.

Healthcare

Healthcare in the U.S. is undergoing a transformation as value-based pay systems put more emphasis on efficiency and patient outcomes. IT plays a significant role in this. IT workers are involved with creating better ways to share patient data, getting information to doctors to support clinical decisions, and supporting more efficient communication between healthcare professionals. This is in addition to managing electronic healthcare systems (EHR) that put records into digital form. Above all, the goal is to improve healthcare operations by better analyzing and sharing data.
Health IT professionals work in a variety of settings. These settings include:
  • hospitals
  • physician clinics
  • insurance providers
  • and consulting companies that provide IT services to healthcare operations

Retail

Amazon has shown the way to the future of retail. They’ve also put many traditional businesses on the edge of extinction. Hence, many of them are scrambling to hire IT workers as they reinvent themselves as digital retailers (Walmart is probably the best-known example). Moving to an online retail model has created a need for IT professionals to build new computer infrastructures for businesses. A data-driven approach to marketing and sales also has led to the need for more developers and engineers to create systems that support marketers in their efforts to better reach and target consumers in a digital landscape.

Government

Governments handle sensitive information from taxpayers every day. Consequently, there is an increasing emphasis on creating the systems needed for data security. As a result, there are a wealth of jobs in that area for government agencies at the federal, state and even local level (in larger cities and counties). These positions require a focus on cybersecurity. The typical path in this line of IT work is to continue getting certifications in cybersecurity. Then earn higher levels of security clearance as you go. IT professionals work continuously to update systems and keep them safe from an ever-evolving list of cybersecurity threats.

Defense

Private companies that contract with the Department of Defense for aerospace and defense work, such as General Dynamics, are another area where IT professionals are in demand. In some cases, those who have first worked directly for the government will take jobs in private industry. Some of the work in this area involves cybersecurity but can include working on cutting-edge artificial intelligence and machine learning systems.

Education

Universities, colleges and K-12 schools and school districts are rapidly adapting technology. Examples include the adoption of “active learning” classrooms that use tech tools for collaboration, the evolution of online learning platforms at universities and the use of data-driven strategies to identify students who are at-risk.

Supply Chain

IT workers increasingly are involved with creating systems for use in supply chains for every industry. In some cases, such as in healthcare and the military, supply chains are critical to the operation. In retail, competition is fierce to provide the fastest, more accurate product delivery systems. There is a need for applied IT professionals in all these cases. Examples of supply chain cover many areas. They include the Internet of Things, automation in warehouses, self-driving trucks, collecting and analyzing data points on issues such as weather and road conditions. A recent survey by supply chain analytics company Logility reported that  30% of 1,000 supply chain providers surveyed say they need improvements in the speed and accuracy of their deliveries. IT professionals play an influential role in reaching that goal. These are some of the industries where IT workers will find plenty of opportunities. Earning a master’s degree in Applied IT not only sets up graduates to enter these industries, but also prepares them for a leadership role.
