Earning a master’s degree does more than expand your skill set and build a larger base of knowledge. Although, of course, it does those things, too. Becoming a graduate student sends a signal to current and future employers that you have the mindset to take on the biggest challenges in your profession. This includes those that want to take on leadership positions in information technology. Therefore, making earning a master’s degree necessary to stand out in the crowd. A master’s degree in applied IT, such as the one offered by Montclair State University, prepares future leaders not only for the technology-based challenges of the job, but also with the skills needed to become leaders in the industry.

Skills Learned in a Master’s Degree Program

The skills learned in a master’s degree program can prepare graduates for leadership roles. The Montclair State University master’s program in applied IT incorporates management skills into the program. This includes knowledge on the laws and regulations that govern IT and developing high-level communication skills. The advantages are many. Those with a master’s degree typically get paid more. Those who earn a master’s degree also are more likely candidates for promotion. Because, as the professional matures, more employers want those moving into leadership roles to have earned a graduate degree.

Another factor is that more people are earning a college degree. This had led to employers filling jobs that once only required a high school diploma with those who have earned a bachelor’s degree. In turn, jobs that once required a bachelor’s degree now are increasingly being filled by those with a master’s degree, according to The Economist. A bachelor’s degree can get you into the IT profession. However, a master’s degree is increasingly important for those who want to move up the corporate ladder.

Important IT leadership Skills

One obvious advantage of a master’s degree is that graduates learn the latest about technology developments. In addition, they also learn the latest strategies in leveraging IT to make a business more efficient and effective. Setting aside the technology considerations, there are leadership skills that a master’s program can help a graduate develop. They include:

Communication.

You will need to be able to share information clearly and concisely. In contrast, you will also need to be willing to listen to what others have to say. If either skill is lacking, vital information could be missed.

Empathy.

The ability to understand where others are coming from on everything ranging from project development to personal issues.

Flexibility.

The ability to rapidly adapt to a changing environment is key in the modern business world. This is especially true in the area of IT.

A clear vision.

Leaders in IT need to have a well-thought-out plan for what they can accomplish with the department and how it will better serve the overall needs of the company.

Cultural intelligence.

In today’s global, diverse business world, leaders across all areas need to develop a high level of cultural intelligence.
Deciding on becoming a leader in IT is a challenging choice to make. But the rewards, both in accomplishments and practical areas such as money and promotions, can be numerous. For those with such ambitions, a master’s degree in applied IT can be a crucial step along their career path. Are you ready to explore this option for yourself?
