Computer and information technology employment is growing faster than any other occupation and is expected to grow 13% between 2016 and 2026. That translates to about 557,100 new jobs that will need to be filled by intelligent and driven individuals.

Whether you’re a new college graduate or have been in your current career for a while, these numbers might make you think twice about your current career path.

If you’re interested in moving into an IT career and want to find the right education option, there are many choices you can take advantage of. From certifications to bootcamps to Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, each of these paths will benefit different kinds of people at different points in their careers.

In this article, we’re going to focus on a Masters of Science in Information Technology (MSIT) degree — why it’s a good option and who will benefit from it.

What is an MSIT degree?
A Master’s of Science in Information Technology is a degree focused on all aspects of designing, building, and managing information and communication technologies.

In a program with a focus in Applied Information Technology, like the Professional Science Master’s program at Montclair State University, students also learn how other business segments, like communication, legal, and management interface with and support those technologies.

A degree like this is a powerhouse combination of business and IT leadership knowledge and skills and can hugely broaden your horizons.

Who will benefit from an MSIT degree?
You don’t have to be a lifelong IT professional to succeed in information technology. In fact, about 30% of IT professionals are “accidental” IT pros, and end up in their position because they happen to be a technology competent person.

An MSIT degree can benefit many kinds of people but is especially useful for professionals who are looking to move into the IT industry or have job experience in IT but don’t have a degree that they might need to move into higher positions with more responsibility.

Many programs will offer classes that will help people who are brand new to the industry gain the foundational knowledge they need to switch career paths and be successful in IT. Our Bootcamp courses are specially designed to prepare you with foundational knowledge of the tech industry, giving you not only support, but a competitive advantage.

How does an MSIT degree differ from other options?
The IT field is growing quickly, and there are a lot of educational options that provide different levels of knowledge and different degrees of benefits.

Coding boot camps are becoming increasingly popular, and they offer a quick way to learn one or more coding languages and find jobs that require those skills. These boot camps usually take between 3 and 6 months, and the cost varies from program to program.

IT certifications are another common education path that show your competency in one specific area, such as the Cisco Certified Network Associate certification which shows the holder is able to do basic setup, maintenance, and problem-solving on networks. In these types of programs, you’re usually required to take certain classes or study specific materials, pass a certification exam, and take continuing education classes to maintain your certifications.

An MSIT degree is different because it isn’t focused on one single topic. Instead, it covers many different areas of study to give its holders a broad set of knowledge. It also helps you build the skills you need to be a leader and an innovator in the industry and teaches you how the technologies you’re learning are applied in different business contexts.

What kinds of careers are available for MSIT holders?
The jobs available to MSIT holders are as varied as the degree holders themselves.

Many of these jobs require not just IT knowledge, but also an understanding of how IT issues extend beyond the IT department and affect other parts of a business’ operations.

Usually, MSIT holders are also more eligible for positions that involve management or leadership duties because of the broad base of knowledge they have.

Positions like Director of Business Intelligence, Geographic Information Systems Manager, Senior Networking Manager, and Director of Information Systems Engineering are just some of the positions that are available to MSIT graduates.

A master’s degree doesn’t just open up a higher level of responsibility, but also a wider variety of jobs so that you can find one that you’re truly passionate about and interested in.
